The Belvedere
Battery Park City Authority
With Martin Puryear
New York, New York
Located along the edge of the Hudson River near the southern tip of Manhattan, The Belvedere is a recreational walking park and a gateway to the City. Surrounded by water on two sides with views of the Hudson River, Ellis Island, and Liberty Island, The Belvedere includes an elevated park with a grove of trees and a meandering esplanade. Two striking, multi-story, stainless steel pylons, designed by Martin Puryear, distinctively mark the park for those entering the site by ferry. A split-faced granite wall, topped by teak and stainless steel rails, mediates between the Belvedere’s two levels. The wall reflects the curves of the river, provides seating and views, and connects pedestrians to the surrounding buildings.
