Tilles Center for the Performing Arts
Long Island University
CW Post Campus
Brookville, New York
The Tilles Center, originally constructed in 1981, seats 2,250 people, but due to budget constraints, was designed without proper entrance lobbies and amenities. The new Lobby Expansion Project provides a glass enclosed, cube-shaped entry pavilion and a separate space for secondary, pre-performance functions. The glass boxes create a dramatic arrival node for the patrons. The roofs and plaza areas are are designed to be planted with ground cover for energy conservation purposes. At night, the glass structures have a glowing abstract presence to contrast with the opaque, circular form of the performance hall. Patrons enter at roof level, looking out over an evergreen covered plateau and descend a grand staircase into the function area below.
