Constructed in 1911, The Edgar Allan Poe School is an iconic civic landmark and has served the community for more than 100 years. Working with the NYC School Construction Authority, Mitchell Giurgola designed a 5-story, 70,000 square-foot addition and renovation of a portion of P.S. 46X in the Bedford Park neighborhood of the Bronx.

The new building links to the existing building at all levels to create a unified school facility for 500 students that makes efficient use of the original building while also increasing capacity. The updated school program includes additional classrooms and special instructional spaces, modernized kitchen and cafeteria facilities, a gymnasium, and a new performance space to replace the existing auditorium. There is also a significant increase in outdoor play space on the ground level and on the rooftop of the addition.
