The Bronx Civil Supreme Courthouse is a nine-story, Art Deco style historic structure designed in 1931. Home to Civil Court, Criminal Court, the Borough President and the Marriage Bureau, the courthouse has been the center of civic life in the Bronx for over 80 years. When Mitchell Giurgola began work on the building, it was both overcrowded and rundown. In 2008, one-third of the building’s occupants were relocated, freeing up significant space to accommodate the growing needs of the remaining courts.

Mitchell Giurgola designed the multi-phase gut renovation that spanned approximately 54,000 square-feet across seven floors. The renovation work included courtrooms, office areas, the law library, document storage rooms, the jury assembly room, and mechanical rooms to support the renovated areas.
