Founded in 1898, Weill Cornell Medicine has been located at the current Upper East Side campus since 1932. The new Feil Family Student Center is part of the ongoing evolution of the College’s facilities. Phase one of the student center included the refurbishment of eight existing classrooms and the gut renovation of outdated labs into additional classrooms with a break out lounge to achieve the College’s goals of growth, flexibility, physicianship instruction and student well-being. Phase 2 includes collaborative student spaces for various forms of study and activity.

With a commitment to student well-being, a series of student focus groups worked with the design team to create dedicated spaces that offer them the flexibility, autonomy and privacy they desired. A range of formal and informal gathering is fostered via break out spaces, activity rooms and open lounges culminating in the ‘hearth’ gathering space. The student center is tied together with a theme of natural light, views and warm wood combined with relaxed and colorful furnishing. The project is targeting LEED (CI) Gold certification as part of the College’s commitment to sustainability.
