The new 76,000 square-foot Computer Science Building at Stony Brook University provides state-of-the-art graduate and undergraduate teaching and research laboratories for the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook. Ranked among the leading computer science research programs in the nation, spaces were designed to accommodate specialized research topics such as visualization and graphics, wireless and mobile computing, cybersecurity, and algorithms. The new three-story facility includes a striking, light-filled atrium that offers open space and study areas for collaborative work and information sharing.

Building Program

Designing a Community-Oriented Space

The driving principle behind the design of the facility was the client’s goal to create a community-oriented space that would unite the Computer Science department both internally and with the rest of the campus. To meet this goal, the new L-shaped building was sited near the existing computer science building to establish a new “Science Court” on campus. In addition, a major design feature of the new facility is a light-filled atrium offering unique spaces for collaboration.
